Iowa Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

  • All License

    • 36 hours of CE biennially, which must include at least 3 hours of ethics.

    • 50% of the CE hours can be self-study.

  • Long Term Care -LTC

    • Agents wishing to sell Long Term Care are required to take a one time only 8 hour Department of Insurance certified course

    • Each license term thereafter each agent must complete a 4 hour Long Term Care Partnership CE course that is approved by the department.

  • Flood Insurance Training

    • An insurance producer who sells flood insurance may satisfy the minimum training and education requirements by completing a 3-hour course related to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

  • A nonresident agent who is from a state that has CE requirements and is in good standing.

  • A producer who is licensed for credit or surety. This producer need not report CE credits but must pay the appropriate fee to renew the license.

  • A producer who is an attorney licensed to sell insurance. The producer/attorney must file a report showing proof of compliance with the continuing legal education requirement for the attorney’s home state and pay the CE fee and the renewal fee. If the attorney does not have a CE requirement in their home state, they must comply with the Iowa insurance CE requirements.

  • The renewal term of the license is every 3 years based on the agents birth month.
  • Online courses
  • Independent Self-study
  • Classroom Study
  • Final exams are to be monitored by a disinterested third party.
  • Final exams are Closed book.
  • A passing grade of at least 70% required to pass the course.

  • Certificates of completion are available as soon as a course is completed with a passing grade. Certificates should be printed and kept on file.

  • CE completions are submitted electronically the next business day after a passing completion is acquired.

  • Courses may NOT be taken for credit more than once in each renewal period.
  • CE credits may NOT be carried over from one term to another.
